The Magic of Calendula: Benefits For Your Skincare Routine

You’re probably more familiar with the incredible Calendula flower than you first realise. Calendula flowers are also known by the name ‘Pot Marigolds’ or their scientific name ‘Calendula Officinalis’. They’re most commonly known for their trademark bright orange and yellow petals which have made them a staple in Cottage gardens across Britain.

What you might not know is just how useful, and diverse, the Calendula flower is. ‘Calendula’ actually refers to a family of around 20 bushy annual and perennial plants that grow everywhere from the Canary Islands to Iran. The Calendula flower was originally introduced to Europe after it was found growing in the wild by crusaders in the Holy Land.

Long before it was introduced to Europe, Calendula extract had been prized as a powerful medicinal and beauty tool. At Dilmaherbals, we use Calendula that has been grown in the Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand, northern India. Calendula flowers are actually so prized in India that they have been used to decorate statues of Hindu deities throughout history.

In recent years, Calendula has grown in popularity in the Western world and become a popular addition to people’s skincare routines. Many people are still unaware of just how useful this flower is though!

In our guide to Calendula skincare, we’re going to teach you more about this magic little plant and the skin benefits it can offer you.

Where does the name Calendula come from?

Pronounced kuh-len-juh-luh, the Calendula flower takes its name from the Latin ‘kalendae’. This roughly translates to the new moon or the first day of the month. The name was chosen because, traditionally, Calendula flowers were believed to only bloom on the first day of the new moon which also marked the start of a new month on Lunar calendars.

How Do You Create Calendula Extract?

Almost the entire Calendula plant can be used when creating Calendula extract. The extract is taken from the leaves, petals and seeds of Calendula Officinalis and has been used as an alternative treatment for everything from various skin conditions to muscle spasms.

Some people choose to ingest Calendula, using it to make a soothing tea or even in salads, but Calendula cream is incredibly effective when applied topically to your skin.

Calendula Has Incredible Anti-Bacterial & Anti-Inflammatory Properties

If you’ve suffered from skin inflammation, you know that it can impact your entire life. Not only does skin inflammation cause swelling and redness, but it can also trigger other skin problems such as rosacea, eczema and even acne breakouts.

These skin conditions don’t just impact you physically, they can take a real mental toll. Studies have found skin conditions like acne can actually worsen depression and negative self-feelings. It can be difficult to find a product that helps fight these problems whilst being kind enough that your skin isn’t left feeling dried out.

This is where the gentle power of Calendula can help. Calendula petals are filled with flavonoids, saponins and triterpenoids which work to prevent your body from releasing histamines. Histamines can cause redness, pain, inflammation and allergies such as hayfever. By preventing your body from releasing them, you can minimise many of the problems inflammation causes.

This is why we choose to use Calendula extract in our Ojas Anti-Blemish Night Cream, which is a must-have in any problem-prone skincare routine! The Calendula extract works with the other natural ingredients and essential oils to soothe your skin while clearing the pores and balancing your skin’s oils to prevent breakouts and irritation.

Calendula Is Incredibly Moisturising

Calendula is rich in linoleic acid, which is known as an essential fatty acid. Now you might hear the word ‘fat’ and start worrying about grease or oil build up on your skin but this isn’t the case at all! Essential oils, such as linoleic acid, give your skin the nourishment it needs so it can better absorb nutrients and retain water.

By working with your skin, Calendula cream can help keep your face looking refreshed and rejuvenated throughout the entire day without any oily buildup. For that extra skin hydration boost, pair our Calendula based night cream with our Aahana Rich Moisturising Cream in the daytime.

Calendula can help keep your skin plump and glowing

As well as the short-term benefits you’ll see from Calendula, it actually helps create healthier skin long term. Using Calendula in your skincare routine will help your skin look plump and youthful as Calendula promotes the production of collagen.

Collagen is an essential protein that is responsible for maintaining your skin elasticity. The elasticity in your skin is what causes it to look plump and as you age, you naturally begin to lose collagen and your body struggles to produce more. If you feel like you don’t look quite as fresh-faced, it may be your body’s naturally depleting collagen.

Using Calendula can really help with bringing back your youthful glow as it promotes collagen production within your skin, helping your skin look naturally firmer and plumper. If you’re worried about fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes, try our Naira Under Eye Cream. This luxurious cream uses antioxidants and Vitamin C to banish eye bags and smooth skin.

Calendula’s healing properties can reduce the appearance of acne scarring

As we mentioned before, Calendula extract has been a go-to product in many people’s medicine cabinet for hundreds of years. It has been used to treat menstrual cramps and its soothing properties have been proven to greatly ease skin conditions like eczema and diaper rash.

Calendula has even been found to speed up the time it takes for wounds to heal. In a study to find out whether or not Calendula oil had any impact on wound healing, researchers found it dramatically reduced the time it took C-section scars to heal compared to women who were not treated with any Calendula products.

The reason Calendula is such an effective healing tool is that calendula increases blood flow which helps to improve the recovery times of scars. With consistent use of our night cream, you’ll find Calendula will help to reduce scarring left behind by acne giving you a more even complexion.
